Borneo Ironwood, locally known as Ulin, is one of nature’s most remarkable hardwoods. Growing less than 0.5 mm per year, it develops an exceptionally dense structure that makes it ideal for outdoor architecture and long-term installations.
Renowned for its Class 1 natural durability, Ulin performs flawlessly both above and below ground. Its innate resistance to termites, decay, and tropical weather has made it a trusted building material for generations.
For centuries, Dayak communities in Kalimantan have used Ulin to construct homes, bridges, and docks — enduring landmarks of strength and craftsmanship. Native to select regions across Southeast Asia, Ulin trees can live for over a thousand years, embodying resilience and heritage.
At Naturanexa, we honour this legacy by working exclusively with 100% reclaimed Ulin, carefully salvaged from old houses, bridges, and piers across Borneo. Each piece is reworked by hand into anew architectural elements — such as our slat wall panels and outdoor fences — carrying forward both the story and the spirit of the original wood in a refined, sustainable form.
FAQ – Slat Wood Wall Panels
What is a slat wall panel?
A slat wall panel is a series of narrow wooden slats installed with even spacing to create a decorative and functional surface. It adds texture, warmth, and acoustic softness to interiors while also serving as a durable cladding for outdoor use.
What is the difference between a slat wall and a fluted panel?
Fluted panels have continuous grooves milled into a flat board, whereas slat walls use individual wood pieces mounted with visible gaps. Slat panels offer greater depth, ventilation, and material authenticity.
Are slat wood panels good for outdoor use?
Yes. Our reclaimed ironwood is naturally weather-resistant and can withstand sun, rain, and humidity without chemical treatment — ideal for façades and garden screens.
How do you install slat wood panels?
Panels can be fixed on ironwood battens (spaced 100 cm) for strong anchoring or on plywood backing for flat interior walls. They may be installed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally depending on the design.
What kind of wood is used for your slat walls?
We use only reclaimed Kalimantan ironwood, renowned for its exceptional density, termite resistance, and longevity.
Is it cheaper to make your own slat wall?
DIY options exist, but professionally crafted panels ensure alignment, durability, and finish quality that homemade versions often lack. Our ready-to-install modules save both labor and material waste.
Are slat walls a trend or timeless design?
While they’ve surged in popularity, slat walls remain timeless thanks to their natural materials and architectural balance between light and shadow.
How much does a slat wall cost to build?
Prices start from 980,000 Rp / m² for standard panels, with variations depending on finish, custom size, and installation requirements.
What is the best wood for slat walls and dividers?
Hardwoods with natural oils and density — such as ironwood, teak, or merbau — are ideal. Ironwood is especially suited for tropical outdoor applications.
Are slat walls hard to maintain or clean?
No. They require minimal maintenance — occasional dusting or a light wipe with a damp cloth. Outdoor panels can be re-oiled annually to refresh their tone.
What are the advantages of reclaimed ironwood panels?
They offer unmatched strength, longevity, and eco-value. Every panel carries a story of sustainable reuse — preserving forests while celebrating natural beauty.
Are slat walls worth it?
Absolutely. They combine function, aesthetics, and sustainability, adding value to both interior and exterior projects.
